最終日の今日は一人ロンドン動物園へ。

Last day I went to London Zoo alone.

イグアナと飼育員のお姉さん。

ロンドン動物園には動物だけでなく建築も見に来た。１つ目がこのペンギンプール(Lubetkin and Tecton, 1934)。1934年完成のこの建物は当時まだ新しいコンクリート使った造形的な表現と共に、その形態はペンギンが滑るという目的に沿った物であり機能主義を明確な形で表現した建築とも言える。

実際にペンギンが滑っている姿を見たかったけれど、現在は保存建築物扱いをうけて使われていないらしい。

I came to see not only animals but also architectures. The first one is this Penguin Pool (Lubetkin and Tecton, 1934). This building uses concrete which is still new on that time and this shape is based on penguins’ slider. It can be said to show functionalism clearly.

I wanted to see penguins really slides but it was registered for preserved building and not used now.

そして象舎／犀舎(Hugh Casson and Neville Conder, 1965)。中にいる動物が安らげる様に外周部に開口はなくスカイライトが設けられている。その量感とコンクリート表面のラフな縦目地仕上げがどこか像を彷彿とさせる。しかし中には像も犀もいなかった。

Next, Casson Pavilion (Elephant and Rhinoceros House) (Hugh Casson and Neville Conder, 1965). For animals inside there were no window on the wall but sky light on the roof. Its volume and rough texture remind us a elephant and rhinoceros. But inside there were no elephants and rhinoceroses.

最後に鳥小屋(Cedric Price, 1963)。鳥が飛び回るだけの十分な空間を最小限の部材で構成するためにテンセグリティ構造が用いられている。遠目からはその鉄柱の太さが目立つが、近づくと周りの樹の太さと馴染んでいてそこまで気にならない。ネットで空間を切り取ったかの様な空間は気持ちがいい。ただ、中にかけられた橋を移動していてもあまり鳥を近くに感じることが出来ない。

Final, Aviary (Cedric Price, 1963). To get big space for birds flying with less material, tensegrity is used. From far, column’s size is felt as too big but from near it match to trees size. The large space as if cut by only net was comfortable. But when walk on bridge inside, couldn’t feel birds near.

ロンドンに戻り、ピカデリーサーカス付近のパサージュを幾つか回る。

Back to London and went to some passages near Piccadilly Circus.

途中隈さんの作品も発見。

Could find Kengo Kuma’s interior work.

街中では大量のサンタの衣装を着たローラースケート集団が走り抜けていて、一時道路がストップ。でも車やバスの運転手達も窓から写真を撮り楽しんでいた。

In the city center many St. Claus costumed roller skaters run and transportation stopped. But drivers of cars and buses took a photo and enjoyed.

ユーロラインの夜行でブリュッセルへと向かう。帰りは海底トンネルではなくフェリーを利用。

By night bus of Eurolines to Brussels. In back not under sea tunnel but a ferry.
