今日12月6日はサンタクロースの由来とされている聖ニコラスの誕生日。

ベルギーやオランダでは前日の5日はシント・ニコラス・デーと呼ばれる第二のクリスマスとされ、プレゼント交換などを行い盛り上がり、代わりに25日は家族で穏やかに過ごし祈りを捧げる。

聖ニコラスはシント・ニコラス・デーよりも早く11月中旬にブラック・ピートと呼ばれる黒人の従者達を従えてスペインからアムステルダムへ蒸気船にのってやって来て、夜な夜な白馬にまたがって子供達の家を巡る。

子供達は先ずは白馬の気を引こうと靴下にニンジンや角砂糖を入れておき、それが朝にはなくなり代わりにお菓子が入れられているらしい。毎日お菓子がもらえるなんてうらやましい。そしてシント・ニコラス・デー当日にはたくさんのお菓子がプレゼントされるらしい。

聖ニコラス(St. Nicholas)は別名シンタクラース(Sinterklaas)と呼ばれ、サンタクロース(Santa Claus)の由来とされている。

Today 6 December is a birth day of St. Nicholas, who is said to be origin of Santa Claus.

In belgium and Netherlands 5 December is called as St. Nicholas Day, the other Christmas, and people make parties and exchange party. On 25 December they stay with family and spend calm time.

St. Nicholas arrived Amsterdam from Spain with Black Peters by steam ship in middle December. And they goes children's house by white horse every night.

Children think they have to attract horse's affection and put callouts and sugars in the socks. Next morning there are sweets and candies instead of them. I envy they can get sweets every day.

St. Nicholas is said also Sinterklaas and origin of Santa Claus.
